Summer’s here and the picnic
gear is brought out of storage ready for the point-to-point or cricket
match. I can remember hazy summer holidays where my friends and I would
carry wicker baskets loaded with sandwiches and ‘pop’ down to the
sides of small streams where we would wade and fish whilst our parents
sat, drank and put the world to rights. In fact these days picnics have
become quite sophisticated, but they still maintain their rustic charm
either as a family group or at large functions. You can now buy
dedicated picnic hampers with all the trimmings as regards cutlery and
crockery from bone china to Tupperware, some contain plastic glasses and
some cut crystal, it’s really amazing what’s on offer if you look
around. If your tastes are more to the
wilderness rucksack versions for a two-person picnic are on the market
so you can have a glass of chardonnay and quail’s on a hill in the
highlands if you so wish. The problem is that picnics mean
sitting on the ground and that in Britain, even in summer can mean
getting damp. It’s not so bad on hot summer days and we have an old
tartan blanket we use for the food and we sit around it. Occasionally
you’re going to need to sit on the blanket or rug and you can now buy
ones that cover a substantial area and waterproofed underneath so the
cold and damp don’t seep thorough. Remember to be prepared though so
that your picnic doesn’t get spoiled. We always take an umbrella, and
insect repellent. It’s also a good idea to take some sun cream, after
sun and a hat. The sun is usually at its hottest when you’re having a
