It’s
a very good idea to try a model on if you possibly can before buying but
do remember ideally they should not be used until the child can support
their own head. A
carrier with a height adjustable harness is an absolute must as they allow
people of different heights to use the same carrier and you can then
adjust the child seat height as your child grows while you still carrying
in comfort. Check to on the number of pockets and pouches you get for
storing packed lunches, maps and nappies etc.
Some sort of sunshade is a good idea and many models now come with one built in but others still only offer it as an additional purchase so do check first. The same applies to rain covers and do have a look to see if your model have a sternum strap for greater support? Make sure the harness system is well padded, as should be the waist belt, and make sure the latter rests with the lower edge just on your hips. Think too about foot stirrups for your child when they’re a bit older so they can adjust their weight accordingly.

good tip for back carriers is to buy a small hand mirror to keep in your
jacket pocket, or one of the more accessible pockets of the carrier so you
can keep an eye on your child although some models now come equipped with
one.
