Not Just For The
Birds |

Nest
boxes serve a duel purpose in our gardens. They provide hours of
interest from when the birds start to show an interest in the box to
when the youngsters fledge and are sitting on the top waiting to be fed. They
also make us feel we are doing something to help the local wildlife.
However nowadays next boxes can be bought for just about every bird
that’s likely to visit your garden. We have them for, wagtails,
spotted flycatchers, blue and great tits as well as swallows and house
martins. You
can also buy nest boxes for kestrels and barn owls. The
reason nestboxes are so important for the latter is because suitable
roost/nest sites (old barns, hollow trees etc) have largely disappeared.
Most boxes are placed in modern farm buildings as these are
ideal/numerous and 97% of them are unsuitable unless a box is erected. It
is easy to forget too that the great majority of the
insects to be found in our gardens are beneficial. You can encourage
creatures such as bumblebees and beetles, ladybirds and lacewings, with
some ingenious insect houses and they, like birdboxes can be fixed in a
variety of situations and are designed for easy viewing. If
you increase the insect population not only will you attract birds but
you will also get bats. Batboxes are simply amazing and you can buy them
for different species and they can come in quite large sizes to allow
colonies to develop inside. Please
note that most of the websites here don’t just sell the item we have
mentioned. By delving round you’ll probably find nestboxes for the
animals we’ve mentioned plus a few more such as boxes hedgehogs and
tunnels for kingfishers.
